St Peter Parmentergate has been in the care of the NHCT since the mid 1980s over which time it has had various uses.

The main part of the building had been empty for over 3 years when in 2005 the NHCT were approached by Lyn & Peter Shipley who were looking for premises for the Norwich Academy of Martial Arts (NAMA). As the church was in a “Single Regeneration Budget Area” the Trust secured a substantial grant from SRB funds plus a £15,000 grant from the East of England Development Agency. Much of the conversion was carried out by the Shipleys themselves assisted by club members. The tenants also invested in the building to ensure it was equipped to the correct standard.

The Shipleys had dreamed of opening up a martial arts centre for a number of years. Interestingly Peter started training at the age of 5 at St Michael Coslany Church on Duke Street.  The church is in an ideal location for NAMA but as important is the atmosphere in this beautiful, magnificent building. Classes transferred to the Church in mid September and now the church receives approximately 60 visitors each week. Students range in age from three to adult and they attend a variety of classes from Kick Boxing to Tai Chi.

As with all of the churches renovations have been innovative & imaginative to ensure the best use of space. At St Peter Parmentergate this has involved locating a boxing ring in the chancel whilst the pews in the nave have been replaced with mats & a punch bag.

Although the overall costs of locating in a church are believed to be comparable with locating in other comparable buildings they are distributed differently e.g. The Shipleys believe heating costs will be higher in winter but air conditioning will not be necessary in the summer. There were no problems in the conversion meeting Disabled Access requirements.

The church is now truly playing its part in the regeneration of the King Street Area
